Spiritual Adultery | Bridget Marcus

Spiritual adultery is a biblical term used to describe unfaithfulness to God, particularly when someone turns away from Him to pursue idols, false beliefs, or worldly desires. It is often portrayed as a form of betrayal in a covenant relationship, similar to a spouse being unfaithful in marriage. So many of us have committed spiritual adultery at some point or another. A dream I had not long ago was the Holy Spirit revealing it as well as the compromise happening in the body of Christ. Here's a breakdown of its meaning:

Definition of Spiritual Adultery:

Spiritual adultery is when someone who is in a covenant relationship with God turns their heart, loyalty, or worship away from Him and gives it to something or someone else—whether that be other gods, idols, people, or worldly systems.

Biblical Foundations:

1. Old Testament:

Jeremiah 3:20 (NKJV):“Surely, as a wife treacherously departs from her husband,So have you dealt treacherously with Me,O house of Israel,” says the Lord.

Ezekiel 16 & 23:God uses strong imagery of a wife (Israel or Jerusalem) committing adultery with other nations and idols to describe Israel’s unfaithfulness.

Hosea’s Marriage to Gomer:Hosea’s relationship with his unfaithful wife is a prophetic picture of God’s relationship with Israel. God likens their idol worship and alliances with other nations to marital unfaithfulness.

2. New Testament:

James 4:4 (TPT):“You have become spiritual adulterers who are having an affair, an unholy relationship with the world! Don’t you know that flirting with the world’s values places you at odds with God?”

2 Corinthians 11:2-3 (NKJV):“For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. But I fear... your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.”

Examples of Spiritual Adultery Today:

Idolizing material wealth, success, fame, or people over God

Compromising biblical truth to fit into cultural or worldly values

Seeking guidance from occult practices (horoscopes, tarot, etc.)

Placing trust in politics, power, or people rather than God

Mixing Christianity with false religions or teachings (syncretism)

God's Heart About It:

God is jealous for His people—not in a human, insecure way, but with a righteous desire for exclusive relationship with those He loves.

Exodus 34:14 (NLT):“You must worship no other gods, for the Lord, whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you.”

How to Respond:

Repentance: Return to your first love. (Revelation 2:4-5)

Renewal of Covenant: Surrender your heart, loyalty, and affection to the Lord alone.

Spiritual Discipline: Stay in the Word, prayer, and worship to guard your heart from being drawn away.

Prayer: Returning to My First Love

Heavenly Father,

I come before You with a heart that is open, honest, and humbled. I confess that I have allowed my heart to wander. I have given my attention, affection, and trust to things and people that were never meant to take Your place. Forgive me, Lord, for every time I chose the world over Your Word, For every moment I prioritized temporary comfort over eternal truth.

You are my first love. You are my covenant-keeping God. I repent for the ways I have committed spiritual adultery. Looking to idols of success, control, validation, or pleasure Instead of resting in Your perfect love.

Cleanse me, Lord. Wash me with the blood of Jesus and make me whole again. Break every soul tie and agreement I have made with anything that stands between us. I renounce the world's pull, and I realign my heart with Yours.

I invite You to take Your rightful place on the throne of my life. Be my One Desire, my Greatest Love, my Source, my Shelter, and my Strength. Restore in me the joy of my salvation and awaken holy hunger again.Seal my heart with devotion, and let my life be a living offering to You alone.

In Jesus’ holy name I pray,Amen.
