When Control is a Symptom of a Wounded Heart | Bridget Marcus

Control often wears a mask—it looks like "I just want things to be safe, predictable, or done right." But if we’re honest, behind control is usually fear, unhealed wounds, and a lack of trust.

When life has felt chaotic, unsafe, or filled with betrayal, our hearts build walls and try to control outcomes, people, and even God. Sometimes that control spills over into trying to control others—their decisions, actions, or even their emotions—because deep down, we fear what their choices might cost us.

But control is just an illusion—it drains us, isolates us, and blocks the flow of the Holy Spirit.

Signs You’re Operating in Control Instead of Trust:

You struggle to delegate or let others help you.

You feel the need to tell others what to do so you feel safe.

Anxiety rises when things feel out of your hands.

You fear being vulnerable or depending on others.

You constantly replay scenarios, trying to figure out every outcome.

You battle with irritability or impatience when things don’t go as planned.

You try to manipulate situations or people to avoid discomfort.

You pray, but secretly hold onto your own “back up plan.”

But here’s the truth—we were never meant to carry what only God can hold.

When we surrender control, we’re not giving up responsibility—we’re giving up the burden of being our own savior.

Scriptures to Meditate on:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”— Proverbs 3:5-6

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”— 1 Peter 5:7

Prayer of Surrender:

Father, I confess that I’ve tried to control what was never mine to hold. I’ve been led by fear, not by faith. I’ve trusted in my own understanding more than I’ve trusted in You. I’ve even tried to control people around me to feel safe, and I repent for placing myself in Your position in their lives.

Today, I surrender—my need to control people, outcomes, my anxiety, my plans, and my need for certainty. Heal the places in me that fear surrender. Teach my heart that Your leadership is perfect and Your love is safe.

I declare that You are God—I am not. I release control, and I choose to trust You, even when I don’t understand. Lead me, Father. I will follow.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today, let the weight of control fall off. Let God lead—His way is always better.
